My 24/7 Principal Meeting at Newcomb High

Hi, my name is Billy Haskey. I’m a freshman at Newcomb High School and earlier this year I joined Evolvement with No Minor Sale and 24/7. Evolvement is a program in which we talk about the danger of tobacco in our youth and our goal is keeping tobacco away from schools. Evolvement is an effort that works with students across New Mexico on campaigns for better policies, like our 24/7 campaign. The 24/7 Campaign works to make New Mexico schools tobacco-free 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I’m here to help people to make the right choice and stay on the right path. I want to see better tobacco policies because I care about my family and my home in New Mexico. To get support for these policies, I had a meeting with my principal.

Tobacco is dangerous in our youth. We met with the principal to introduce Evolvement, telling him that we help people through strong tobacco policies. We talked about how we can help students in high school. He responded that he was interested in involving Evolvement at the schools and putting 24/7 signs around Newcomb High School. The principal was proud that we had a meeting with him. I thought it would be scary to meet with the principal, but it went well.

While having the meeting we discussed that we need to help kids in New Mexico. I told him about how when I was a kid I never understood tobacco, but when my dad told me how bad it was I wanted to find a way for people to understand it is a weapon that kills us. That is why I met with the principal and why I’m involved with this campaign. I want to help people make the right decisions and remove tobacco products from our schools. I love my family and New Mexico is our home but these tobacco products have ruined many of our lives. No matter what, I will fight to make change in New Mexico and work to be an Evolvement leader like my older brother used to be so I can help my community.
